Working at GDS
We are recruiting for a wide range of roles. If you’d like “the challenge of building world leading digital public services” by working at the Government Digital Service, look at currently available roles on our Jobs page.
A clear message we received from our recent recruitment round was that people were a bit unsure about what it’s actually like to work here – what’s a typical day for one of our developers, what are the offices like, do you have up-to-date equipment and software?
We’ve put together this page to help give you an insight into work here and why you might want to consider applying.

Ben Terrett
Hi I’m Ben and before this I was Design Director at Wieden & Kennedy, an ad agency. I’m one of the founders of Newspaper Club and a partner in Really Interesting Group.
I was attracted to GDS because of the real change happening in the way government does digital. The chance to get design into the heart of that thinking, and to work with a bunch of very talented, very dedicated people was too good to miss.

Frances Berriman
I’m Frances and I work on the front end of GOV.UK, a new site bringing together services and information for citizens that recently went into beta. Previously, I worked as a senior developer at Nature Publishing Group and the BBC and I spent some of my time working with microformats.org.
Being able to join this team to make *the* Government website, that almost everyone in the country will have contact with and will need information from, was too much of a good opportunity to pass up.

James Stewart
I’m James Stewart and I work in GDS as a technical architect. I’ve been leading the technical side of delivering the beta of GOV.UK not only doing hands-on writing of code but also working out a little of the direction we need to take as we really build out a new platform for Government online.

Russell Davies
I’m Russell Davies, I’m here to help make sure the things GDS builds are understood by the people who use them. That means getting a good understanding of our users, looking for ways we can talk to people through the products (without spending any money) and making sure we communicate clearly.
My background is in advertising and marketing and doing this sort of thing for all sorts of global businesses. I’m at GDS because it’s working on the most interesting communications/service problems in the UK today – and the team of people is genuinely brilliant.
